Inmarsat Government to Feature Fast Access to Data with BGAN Converge
By Kasey Schefflin-Emrich, TMCnet Contributing Writer
Mission-critical telecommunication provider Inmarsat (News - Alert) Government recently introduced a new service that will enable broadband global area network users from U.S. military and civilian organizations to obtain better quality and quicker access to data.
The service, BGAN Converge, will provide users with high data rates of video conferencing, video streaming and VoIP services. This is especially suitable for military personnel during active operations, in which they need fast and reliable access to the latest imagery from unmanned aerial vehicles.
“In response to the ever-growing demand for higher data rates, our BGAN Converge offering dramatically enhances throughput up to 800 kbps bi-directionally,” David Helfgott, president and CEO of Inmarsat Government, said in a statement. “It is a practical and effective turnkey alternative to VSAT, while maintaining BGAN’s core characteristics of reliability, security, scalability and global coverage that our government customers demand for their mission-critical communications.”
BGAN Converge features software that rests on a router and a converge server, which is located at the Inmarsat Satellite Access Station. It is compatible with both fixed and mobile platforms and does not require users to change existing equipment. It is also portable and decreases interruptions and delays within the network. Additionally, users of BGAN Converge will be offered early access to Inmarsat's new global Ka-band network called Global Xpress. Full access to the network is expected to be available by the end of the year 2014.
A demonstration of BGAN Converge will be conducted by Inmarsat Government during Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association West 2013, a conference and exposition open to military, government, industry and academic professionals in a variety of fields, set to be held from January 29 to January 31 at the San Diego Convention Center.
In related news, Inmarsat Government has chosen Environics Communications as its new marketing communications agency. Environics will be responsible for increasing awareness of Inmarsat's products, in addition to dealing with analyst relations and trade shows.
