MilSuite Hits Milestone for Unique Users on Military Social Media Site
By Ed Silverstein, TMCnet Contributor
The U.S. Department of Defense recently reached a social media milestone after the 200,000th unique user registered on milSuite.
Some 55,000 new members joined the platform since 2011 when the milSuite enterprise edition was introduced.
MilSuite is a secure platform for the DoD (Department of Defense) and its affiliated persons. It includes almost 20,000 field officers, as well as some top officers. They use it to explain the military’s best practices. MilSuite is accessible to active military personnel, DoD civilian employees, and contractor employees. They represent the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard, TMCnet said.
“It is important that the DoD leverages existing proven technologies to enable the workforce to work more efficiently,” Tom Curran, product director of milSuite, said in a statement. “MilSuite does this by making data, information and knowledge available more quickly, enhancing the decision-making process and enabling collaboration outside of the office space.”
Also, milSuite includes: milWiki, which has over 14,000 military entries; milBook, which hosts over 2,500 working groups; milBlog, where users can post comments; and milTube, where videos can be shared. Registration is achieved via a Common Access Card (CAC), the military explains.
“These applications allow us to break down barriers in how we collaborate because they encourage instant communication and real-time information sharing across geographic and organizational divisions,” Emerson (News - Alert) Keslar, director of the Army’s Military Technical (MilTech) Solutions Office, said in the press release.
His office developed the social media platform. The Army’s Program Executive Office for Command, Control and Communications-Tactical (PEO C3T) is responsible for MilTech Solutions. In addition, milSuite will likely soon be offered as an enterprise product. Version 4.0 of milSuite will be offered later in 2012. It will feature upgrades and integration with Microsoft (News - Alert) SharePoint, as well as a developers’ area.
“Today, thousands of Sailors, Soldiers, Airmen, Marines and DoD civilians discover information, engage with other experts and collaborate in a protected environment regardless of their location,” Curran said in the press release.
